    Agnipath Scheme — Quick Overview

    1. Under Agnipath, youth are recruited as short-term soldiers (called “Agniveers”) in the armed forces (Army, Air Force, Navy) for 4 years (including training).
    2. The scheme aims to bring a youthful profile to the forces, while providing youth an opportunity for disciplined training and service, with a mix of skills, benefits, and potential future absorption.

    Eligibility, Trades & Educational Criteria

    1. Age: Applicants must be aged between 17.5 to 21 years at the time of recruitment.
    2. Education / Trades:
    3. For “General Duty (GD)” in Army: 10th class (matric) pass with certain minimum marks (as per notification).
    4. For “Technical / Aviation / Ammunition / Specialized Trades”: 12th (10+2) Science with Physics, Chemistry, Maths and English (or other criteria as per trade), or a recognized vocational equivalent.
    5. For some non-technical posts like Clerk/Storekeeper/other trades: 12th pass in any stream (or as per eligibility) with required minimum marks.
    6. Marital Status / Gender: As per service norms. Typically only unmarried candidates (subject to the official notification) are considered. rodra.gov.in

Because criteria vary depending on the branch (Army / Air Force / Navy) and trade, candidates must always check the official notification for their batch.

Selection Process & Exam / Recruitment Pattern (2025–26)

According to recent sources for 2025–26 recruitment under the scheme:

Phases of Selection — For e.g. for Army: Written Test → Physical + Medical → Rally / Enrolment.

    1. The initial Written Exam (often called Common Entrance Exam / CEE) is now part of the selection process.
    2. For GD & Tradesmen posts, the written test may typically consist of ~50 questions (on General Knowledge / General Science / Maths / relevant basics).
    3. After clearing the written test, candidates undergo Physical Fitness Test (PFT), Physical Measurement Test (PMT — height/weight/chest/身体条件) as per requirements, and a detailed medical check.
    4. Only those passing all stages are declared “fit/selected” and enrolled. Importantly, medical fitness follows standards of Armed Forces and is final — there is typically no further appeal or review after specialist medical board declares unfit.

This updated pattern (with written exam + rally + physical & medical) reflects the 2025-26 recruitment cycle.

    Medical & Physical Standards

Because recruits serve in armed forces, medical standards are strict (and differ slightly depending on service — Army, Air Force, Navy). General norms include:

    1. Height, weight, body-proportion: Must meet minimum required — for example, for some IAF roles: height minima noted (and chest expansion norms, weight proportionate to height).
    2. Hearing, dental, general health: Good hearing (e.g. hearing whispered voice at certain distance), healthy teeth/gums (for certain roles), no major medical or surgical disability, no acute/chronic illnesses, ability to operate under varied climate/terrain.
    3. Visual standards (for Air Force/Navy/technical trades) — there are norms for eyesight, refractive error limits, colour-vision test etc.; previous corrective eye surgeries (e.g. LASIK/PRK) may lead to rejection.

Because standards vary by trade/service — always refer to the notification for final medically-fit criteria.

    Training Path & Service Period

    1. Service Period: Selected candidates serve as “Agniveers” for 4 years total under Agnipath.
    2. During early stage they undergo training — basic military training plus trade-specific training, as per their assigned roles.
    3. After training, they serve in their designated roles for remainder of the term, following same duties and obligations typical of PBOR (Personnel Below Officer Rank).

The scheme aims to give youth exposure to discipline, skills, life-skills, and a structured environment — for those who might choose defence as a short-term stint or a stepping stone.

Permanent Absorption Rules & Post-Service Benefits

One of the key and often debated parts of Agnipath is post-service absorption and benefits for “Agniveers.”

    1. As per current policy, at the end of 4-year service, up to 25% of Agniveers (based on merit, performance, organizational requirement) may be selected for permanent cadre / longer-term service in Armed Forces.
    2. The rest will be discharged; they receive a lump-sum “Seva Nidhi” package (as per scheme rules) — financial package and other support upon completion of service.
    3. The scheme’s objective: give youth a chance for 4 years of training + career exposure + benefits, without long-term pension burden for defense forces — balancing resource allocation and youth employment opportunity.

Some recent policy discussion occasionally surfaces about potential tweaks (but as of now, 25% absorption remains codified).

What Aspirants Should Know — Key Takeaways & Preparation Tips

    1. Because selection now includes a written exam (online CEE) + physical & medical tests — it’s important to prepare both academically (GK, general science, basic maths as per trade) and physically (running, fitness, endurance) depending on chosen trade.
    2. Carefully check trade-specific educational + medical requirements (especially for technical trades or Air Force/Navy) — because disqualification in medical/fitness standards is strict.
    3. Treat Agnipath both as a 4-year opportunity and — potentially — a gateway to permanent cadre, but with realistic expectations (only ~25% may get absorbed).
    4. Use the 4 years as a learning & skill-building phase (military discipline, vocational/trade training, physical fitness, life-skills) as even after discharge, these can help in other government/private opportunities or further education.
    5. Regularly check official recruitment notifications of respective service (Army / Air Force / Navy) for updated criteria, rally dates, exam pattern or specific changes.

Why Agnipath 2025–26 Matters (for Youth & Defence Careers)

    1. Opens opportunity for young graduates or school-pass out (10th/12th pass) to join Armed Forces without needing higher degrees.
    2. Gives exposure to defence training + discipline + skill development — valuable for youth who want a structured, first-job-experience.
    3. Offers a short-term commitment (4 years) with benefits, but also a chance (for some) for long-term career if selected for permanent cadre — making it a hybrid between “short-term service + potential long-term career.”
    4. Helps Armed Forces maintain a youthful, adaptable, and periodically renewed force — meeting modern strategic requirements while controlling long-term pension burden.
