NDA (National Defence Academy) — Ten-Year Pattern Analysis (2016 → 2025)

Executive summary — short, evidence-backed points

  1. Vacancies for NDA have fluctuated between ~350 and ~420 in most years; there is no steady upward trend — vacancies move with training capacity and MoD requisitions.
  2. Written exam cut-offs (out of 900) cluster in the 330–360 range for qualifying to SSB; final selection cut-offs (out of 1800: written 900 + SSB 900) typically fall between 650–730, varying by year and exam (I/II).
  3. Structural constants: written test (Mathematics + GAT), negative marking (1/3), and SSB of 5 days worth 900 marks — these core mechanics have been stable. Official UPSC notifications remain the primary source for rules and calendar.
  4. Major policy shift: women were permitted to appear from 2021 (interim Supreme Court direction → UPSC notification), and female applications surged that year; integration and vacancies for women have been phased in since.

Direct primary sources (click any heading link to open)

  1. UPSC — official NDA notifications and archive (primary): https://upsc.gov.in.
  2. UPSC — NDA notifications / specific 2024/2025 notification (example): Notific-NDA-NA-I-2025 (UPSC PDF).
  3. UPSC — Cut-off marks archive (NDA final/written cut-offs available): Cut-off Marks Archives.
  4. Vacancy & historical trend compilations: Careers360 (vacancies by year).
  5. Year-wise cut-off compilations: BYJU’S / PW.Live / Testbook aggregated cut-off tables (used only for historical cut-off cross-reference where UPSC PDFs for older years are not centrally tabulated). BYJU'S
  6. Reporting on women’s inclusion (policy + 2021 events): LiveMint / India Today coverage of the Supreme Court order & UPSC action. mint

Year-wise table: vacancies, written cut-off (qualifying for SSB) and final cut-off (selection) — 2016 → 2025

Notes on the table:
  1. Vacancies are the advertised/provisional vacancies published in that year’s UPSC notification or compiled by reputable education portals. Training capacity adjustments sometimes change final recommendations.
  2. Written cut-offs are the cut-offs for qualifying to SSB (out of 900) as reported by UPSC archives / reliable aggregators. Final cut-offs are the marks (out of 1800) for final recommended list. Where UPSC PDF for that specific exam is the source, that is authoritative; where UPSC’s single consolidated item was not directly accessible, reputable compilers (BYJU’S/Testbook/PW) were used.

Trend analysis (2016–2025): what the numbers mean for aspirants

1) Vacancies — cyclic but stable range

  1. Observation: Vacancies generally oscillate between ~350–420 (occasionally higher when INA slots counted), with occasional down-years (training capacity / pandemic effects). There is no linear growth that aspirants can rely on.
  2. Implication: Expect roughly similar competition intensity each year; do not count on more seats in 2026.

2) Written cut-offs (qualifying to SSB) — clustering & sensitivity

  1. Observation: Written qualifying cut-offs largely cluster in 330–360 (out of 900). Year-to-year variation is driven more by the question paper difficulty (especially GAT) than by vacancies.
  2. Implication: Aim to reliably score ≥360 in the written to be in safer territory. A strategy targeting precision (avoid negative marking) yields disproportionate gains.

3) Final cut-offs — SSB is decisive

  1. Observation: Final selection scores (out of 1800) usually range 650–730. SSB contributes 900 marks — good SSB performance can raise lower written scorers into the final list.
  2. Implication: Do not neglect SSB preparation. A 30–40 point boost in SSB can offset written shortfalls.

4) Women’s inclusion (policy impact since 2021)

  1. Observation: 2021 marked the first operational opening for women (Supreme Court direction → UPSC corrigendum). Female candidature surged in 2021; Ministry of Defence subsequently worked on women’s vacancy notification & medical norms.
  2. Implication: Competition dynamics changed—more applicants overall. Women aspirants must study the medical standards and service-specific vacancies published by UPSC / MoD each year.

5) Paper structure & scoring stability

  1. Observation: The core structure (Mathematics paper; GAT incl. English, GK, Physics/Chemistry/Biology/History etc.; negative marking 1/3; SSB 900 marks) has been stable. Any substantive change would be officially notified by UPSC.
  2. Implication: Focus on stable, syllabus-aligned preparation rather than chasing rumours.

Tactical checklist for December 2025 → 2026 aspirants (actionable & prioritized)

  1. Target written = 360+ (out of 900). Prioritize accuracy in GAT (avoid negative marks).
  2. Mathematics mastery: full syllabus practice plus time management (Mathematics is higher value per question).
  3. SSB simulation: group tasks, personal interview practice, psychological test practice — SSB is half the final marks. Invest in mock SSBs.
  4. Medical & eligibility checks early: women candidates must confirm medical/height/weight/norms as notified for that particular year. Check UPSC notification for each cycle.
  5. Document readiness & application windows: UPSC windows are short; watch official UPSC site and apply on time.

List of NDA / NA Exam Cut-off & Result PDF Links (2012–2023)

2013 (II)Cut-off & final result: “Cutoff_Mks_nda-na-II-2013.pdf”

How to verify the numbers for any specific year (quick guide)

  1. Open the UPSC NDA page (notifications & result PDFs): https://upsc.gov.in. Check the specific notification PDF for advertised vacancies and the result/cut-off PDF for written/final cut-offs.
  2. For historical compilations (vacancy tables / quick cut-off lookup) use validated portals like Careers360, BYJU’S, or Testbook — but always cross-check back to UPSC PDF for final confirmation. Careers360

Limitations, data confidence & sources

  1. Highest confidence: Official UPSC PDFs (notifications, results, cut-off archives). Always treat these as authoritative.
  2. Good cross-reference: Careers360, BYJU’S, Testbook — used for historical aggregation where convenient; they are reputable education portals but secondary to UPSC. Careers360

Final: concise checklist for a 2026-ready study plan

  1. Written weekly plan: 5 mathematics sessions + 5 GAT sessions (topic rotation), timed mocks every weekend.
  2. Monthly full-length mock (strict negative marking). Track moving average of written score — aim >360.
  3. Bi-monthly SSB workshops and daily personality/communication practice from month-6.
  4. Verify UPSC.
