What is COAP?
COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal) is a centralized platform created by the IITs and IISc for GATE-qualified candidates seeking admission into M.Tech programs. Through COAP, applicants can view and respond to admission offers made by participating institutes based on their GATE scores.
COAP does not provide admission directly — it only acts as a common portal to accept/reject offers. The actual admission process is handled by the respective institutes.
Understanding COAP Round 2
As of now, Round 2 is active for COAP 2025. In this round, candidates who registered on the COAP portal and have received offers from IITs or IISc must log in and choose one of the given options.
What Options Are Available in COAP Round 2?
Each candidate can select one of the following:
1. Accept and Freeze
- You accept the offer and will not be considered for further rounds.
- Best for candidates who are satisfied with both the institute and branch.
- Once selected, you are out of the COAP process.
2. Retain and Wait
- You keep the current offer and also wait for a better one in the next round.
- Ideal if you like the institute but hope for a better specialization or program in future rounds.
- You can upgrade in the next rounds if a better offer is made.
3. Reject and Wait
- You reject the current offer and wait for better offers in upcoming rounds.
- Risky: There’s no guarantee of receiving better offers later.
- Recommended only if the current offer is far below your expectations.
How to Decide What to Choose in Round 2?
Scenario | Recommended Option |
Got your dream IIT + branch | Accept and Freeze |
Got desired IIT, but not preferred branch | Retain and Wait |
Not satisfied with current offer | Reject and Wait (only if confident of better chances) |
Pro Tip: Analyze past year cutoffs and your GATE rank before making a decision.
Important Points to Remember
- If you do not take any action within the deadline, the offer will expire.
- You can participate in maximum 5 main rounds, and additional rounds (called Decisive Rounds) only if you have not accepted and frozen any offer before.
- COAP does not require any payment; you must apply separately to each institute before using COAP.
Conclusion
COAP Round 2 is a crucial step for GATE aspirants. Make an informed decision based on your GATE score, preferences, and chances. Use “Retain and Wait” wisely, and avoid “Reject and Wait” unless you're sure better offers are coming.
